Seeing spots.

This is a 10 day old chick.

They had 8 eggs for breakfast because I found another secret nest and wasn’t sure how old the eggs were.

It was almost 40 degrees today.  The perfect day to hang out around the water cooler...

...and eat watermelon. Dottie’s favourite.

She laid all the eggs that hatched yellow and black chicks. She is only 7 months old and has not mothered yet.  Her white eggs and chicks are beautiful with an almost 100% fertility rate (good job Simon!).

Maybe next season she will decide to sit. Silver spangled hamburgs are considered to be a non-clucky breed but that was not the case with her mother.

Who would have ever thought of breeding an animal in such a way that it can no longer reproduce without the help of a machine?

You don’t HAVE to give a clucky chook fertile eggs; and there are simple ways to stop them sitting if you don’t want them to.

It’s like those breeds of dogs where large heads are prized.  They have been selected and selected to the point where the mother can’t deliver the pups without a caesarean section. Ludicrous! And these people claim to love their pets.

Then today there was this, which can only mean one thing... More chicks!

These littlies haven’t even dried out yet. In this heat they have opted to fluff up out in the open instead of under their mum.  Angelina is a lovely mum.
Not sure how many there are yet. At least three.

Hatching is all about perfect humidity so I don’t want to move Angelina in case some chicks are still working on getting out of their shell.

In 6 weeks Angelina will have taught them all they need to know to be the perfect edition to your garden. You can put in an expression of interest to own them via this ad: http://chooknet.com.au/index.php?option=com_jdirectory&task=show_content&contentid=2686&catid=1&directory=5&Itemid=129.
